Speak Your Partner's Language of Love This Valentine's Day

If there’s one thing that human beings have learned about love over the years, it’s to never take it for granted. Relationships die of neglect all the time. People need to feel special and appreciated, especially by those closest to them. That’s why it’s important not to let an opportunity like Valentine’s Day pass by without speaking the love language of your partner. For roughly 20 percent of the population, receiving gifts is the primary way they feel loved and appreciated. For millions of others, it’s one of a handful of ways they feel most connected to the important people in their lives.

Expressing Love Through Giving Gifts

By now, most people have heard of the book The 5 Love Languages by American author Gary Chapman. If you haven’t read the book or just need a refresher, Chapman states that you connect with another person most deeply when you speak their language of love. These languages include:

  • Receiving gifts
  • Words of affirmation
  • Quality time
  • Acts of service
  • Physical touch

People whose primary love language is receiving gifts should not be mistaken for those who are simply materialistic. This person truly appreciates the effort, love, and thoughtfulness behind every gift he or she receives, even if it’s not his or her favourite thing. When your husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend identifies with this love language, they feel known and cared for that you made time in your schedule to select something meaningful to them.

To a person who appreciates receiving gifts, they are a visual representation of your feelings for them. Neglecting to give a gift on a day like Valentine’s Day that’s all about love would send the message that you place little value on the other person in your intimate relationship. While that might not be true at all, you must remember that the two of you probably see the world quite differently. Missing gift-giving opportunities unique to him or her and to your relationship, such as a birthday and your anniversary, could make your partner feel equally as devastated.

Of course, humans are complex creatures and don’t fit neatly into a single category in a book. The beauty of it is that you can express many of these love languages at the same time. Even partners who claim they don’t want anything for Valentine’s Day will enjoy knowing you took the time to surprise them.

What Is The Etiquette for End of Year Gifting?

Gift giving is an integral part of our year-end celebrations. Friends and family, co-workers and acquaintances, at Christmas and during the New Year celebrations, the idea of giving these important people something to show that you are thinking of them will most certainly come up.

But what to give? There is so much choice, and yet many gifts are just the same old things, given every year, with only the slightest of variations. And before you can even get to the present choosing stage, the list of who to give something to needs to be created. That, too, is a minefield of difficulties and possibilities.
