Champagne vs Sparkling Wine - How are they Different?

Sparkling wine and champagne are often terms used interchangeably, however wine drinkers who fancy a good glass of bubbles will know that these two aren’t the same.

While all Champagnes are sparkling wines, not all sparkling wines are Champagnes. Let's look at the major differences between Champagne and sparkling wine.

The Wine Region

The main difference between Champagne and any other sparkling wine is the region in which it is produced. A producer can only label their sparkling wine as “Champagne” if it is produced in the Champagne region of France.

Sparkling wine can be produced in any part of the world. For example, Prosecco hails from the Veneto region of Northern Italy, while Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, hails from the Penedès area in Spain.

The Grape Varietals

There are three main grape varieties used to make Champagne:

 - Pinot Noir grapes
 - Meunier grapes
 - Chardonnay grapes

Other approved grape varieties include Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier, and Pinot Gris. These are however rarely used.

As for sparkling wine, it can be produced as a varietal wine or as a blend of various local or international grape varieties. Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) is produced using the Glera grape variety. Sekt (German sparkling wine) is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir grapes.

The Winemaking

The Champagne wine is produced from Méthode Champenoise, known as Méthode Traditionnelle outside the Champagne region. Some other sparkling wines are produced using this method.

The Méthode Traditionnelle entails:

1. Harvesting
2. First fermentation
3. Second fermentation
4. Aging on lees
5. Riddling
6. Disgorging
7. Dosage

For Champagne, the second fermentation and the aging on lees both take at least 15 months for non-vintage and 3 years for vintage.

The Taste

As Champagne ages, it develops a more complex nutty or toasty flavor. A finer vintage Champagne can have aromas like toast, brioche or biscuit.

Champagne can also range from dry (brut) to sweet (doux) depending on the sugar dosage. The ones with more residual sugar are sweeter and fruitier. The longer aging process for Champagne’s gives it a more refined and elegant texture.

Sparkling wines are more fresh and fruity, and their bubble consistency varies from coarse to fine. Prosecco, for example, has more dominant flavours of apple, honeysuckle, peach, melon, and pear. In contrast, Cava has dominant citrus and orchard fruit aromas: quince, yellow apple, lime, and Meyer lemon.

The Price

Champagne is made with the traditional method, which is quite labour-intensive. The traditional method involves a primary fermentation for base wine, followed by a second fermentation inside the bottle. It’s no wonder why it’s produced in limited quantities as compared to other sparkling wines. A non-vintage Champagne can cost around $60, while a vintage one can cost up to $4,000 (Krug - Clos D'Ambonnay Blanc des Noirs 2000).

However, a good bottle of sparkling wine like Prosecco can range from $5 to $40.
